JANE AUSTEN’s last work was a short poem about Winchester (where she died, on 18 July 1817), St Swithin’s Day, & rainy weather (how very British!), written only three days before she died. Her brother, Henry Austen, described the poem as “stanzas replete with fancy and vigour” – in the poem we see t
