On May 30, 1961, conspirators ambushed and assassinated the most powerful man in the Dominican Republic, General Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina. This event caused a tremendous uproar and placed a heavy burden on the shoulders of Trujillo's puppet president at the time, Dr. Joaquín Balaguer Ricardo.
